This toy and were box were designated as EPL 230 and were made in Germany by Lehmann from 1890 to 1945. This is the early version with paper wings on the windmill and a rounded base. This is about the only Lehmann toy that cannot fit in the original box once it is set up according to the instructions. Once the rounded base is installed as directed, it will not fit back into the box. The later version had the name “Gustav” added and can be dissembled and reboxed if desired. These toys operate by weight, and it appears as though the figure moves up the pole as if actually climbing on its own. Shown in a wonderful, original box with extremely rare paper shipping insert.
