This windup toy was designated by Lehmann as EPL 345 and shows a gentleman in period attire with mutton chops guiding the tiller on a three wheeler as he raises and lowers a flag on a pole. Behind him is a little black boy that spins the umbrella as the vehicle moves along. The front wheels are adjustable for straight, right or left travel. There are many versions of this toy made between 1895 and 1938 differentiated by the color scheme and umbrella design. This one is very rare as it has a one piece arm and flag pole crudely made, but it passes the blacklight test and is truly a Lehmann design, undoubtedly a later production for the US market. The umbrella design is unique to this version of the toy also and is unlike the others as it says “Lehmann 345” on the umbrella, unlike any of the others. This is a rare one.
This toy is shown with its nice original Lehmann box.
