This is one of the most popular and most common of the Lehmann toys. Made between 1897 and 1938 and designated EPL 425, it features a frantic clown with fabric clothing holding the reins of an uncooperative donkey that gallops forward and backward in an attempt to throw him off.
These toys are most commonly seen as “Balky Mule” but many were made under the name “Stubborn Donkey” with this unusually lithoed box. Here is a mint toy in a mint box.
