Rare Lehmann “Performing Sea Lion” seal w/fixed winder, no whiskers ever

A popular toy known as EPL 445 made from 1899-1935, this large windup shows a seal that moves well across the table on a winding. Two features make this one rare. One, is that it has a fixed winder and does not use a key like almost all known versions of this toy used. Secondly, it never came with whiskers. You can see the head up close and there is no slit for the whiskers like there is on virtually every one of these you will find. So the assumption would be that this toy would be a late version with these two changes made to save cost. However, the underside of the tail is stamped with one of the very early logos of the company, not one of the later ones like the one appearing on the box with this toy. There are more questions than answers, but any way you look at this toy, it stands out as a rare version of an otherwise common toy.
